This year is the Year of the Tiger and Big Cat Rescue is celebrating in a big way with the 11th Annual Fur Ball this coming Friday October 8th, 2010. Join myself and Big Cat Rescue for an evening of wild fun and a feast fit for a king (of the jungle, that is).

Proceeds from the FUr Ball will fund both the ongoing care of more than 100 big cats that reside at the 45-acre santuary in Tampa, FL as well as the tiger conservation efforts of the International Tiger Coalition.

The Kids and Canines program was started 11 years ago in Hillsborough County, Florida as an anti-truancy initiative. This innovative program pairs truant (not delinquent) middle school teens with a golden retriever to train to be an assistance dog for individuals with physical disabilities or children with autism. The students are paired with an 8 week old puppy and are taught to do the actual ‘hands on’ instructions for the 18-month period it takes to train the dog to perform over 60 commands. These commands include turning on light switches, retrieving articles, removing laundry from dryers, opening doors, and helping with the shopping.

As an animal advocate, Michael Vick's name sends shivers down my spine. Should he be allowed to participate in professional sports? Should he be forgiven for his horrible actions? Should he be subjected to a brain scan as PETA has been rumored to ask for? Should he be the new face for animal rights?

Art work will be on display in the gallery of the Art Institute of Tampa from June 1 to June 13. Raffles will be held throughout the event; items will include jewelry, gift baskets, art work, Harley Davidson Riders Edge bike riding class, and much more.

The event will kick off with an 8:00 AM pancake breakfast and ice carving demonstration.

About the 6th Annual SPCA Tampa Bay Pet Bowl:

The Pet Bowl is one of the SPCA Tampa Bay's signature fundraising events. Last year, they sold out all 60 lanes which included family, friends and corporate leaders joining together to support homeless pets.

They are proud to announce that in 2008 the Pet Bowl raised over $43,000.00. This year, they hope to top that amount to help in the care for over 15,000 homeless and abused pets seen by the SPCA Tampa Bay.

Royal Treatment is back for a visit on HSN tomorrow (Friday, May 8th)! And once again, you'll be able to see my artwork on the walls of the set. If you have a chance to tune in, here are the times... 2AM, 10AM & 3PM!

Royal Treatment has a great line of shampoos that will make Fido smell fabulous. I should know... I am a customer! Kate likes to roll in anything super smelly when she's at the dog park. As she's plunging into a pile of something that has, I'm sure, been simmering in the hot Florida sun for quite sometime, I curse at her under my breath. Only because I know the car ride home will be a memorable one. But knowing that when I get her into the shower, it will all be over with one bath with Royal Treatment, I let her roll in it. She's happy, I'm happy... all is good:) So check it out. If you don't like it, HSN has a great return policy. But I don't think you'll be disappointed.

They are commited to ending the needless deaths of approximately 28,000 adoptable pets yearly in Duval County. Since the start of FCNMHP's spay/neuter programs, they have seen a 31% decrease in overall shelter intake!

They are building a state of the art high volume, high quality spay/neuter clinic due to open this year. At full capacity, they will be able to administer over 200 sterilization surgeries a day!Bravo!

The Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts celebrates its 39th year on March 7 and 8, 2009. Join us at Franklin Street and Lykes Gaslight Square Park in beautiful downtown Tampa.
With some of the country’s most accomplished artists and rising stars vying for the $15,000 Raymond James Best of Show Award and an additional $60,000 in prize money, a showcase featuring the works of local young artists, a weekend full of live entertainment, and a children’s art activity area, it's no wonder the festival is widely recognized as one of the top-rated outdoor fine art and fine craft shows in the country.

I was accepted this year into the Emerging Artist Program (sponsored by SkyPoint & Intown Group)!

The Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts is proud to showcase the work of emerging artists, representing a diversity of styles and media, as part of our annual event. The purpose of the Emerging Artist Program is to recognize and showcase the artwork of up and coming artists who wish to establish themselves in a professional visual arts career.
A limited number of emerging artists will be selected to show in the Festival from the field of applicants through a jury process.

Florida Voices for Animals (FVA) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) that promotes animal rights andfreedom, educating the masses on how to make compassionate choices for those without voices.

February Events

As I started the new year, I sat down with my big desk calendar and all my pet event resources and started to plan. As of last week, I had 3 dog events planned for the month of February: Woofstock, Parade of Greys & Get Rescued in Gulfport.... all new events for me and I was SO excited to be a part of them.

Last Friday, I found out I was accepted into the Emerging Artist Program for the Gasparilla Festival of the Arts... wahoo!!!!!!! SO VERY EXCITED about this! So to gear up for the festival the first weekend on March, I have to give up the dog events in Feb. Boo! But if I want to make it as a full-time artist, I need to have this experience and I need to give it 150%. So, hopefully, as I grow as an artist, I'll be able to help more and more local animal rescues in raising money for the animals who are in need.

SOOOOoooooo..... as soon as the Gasparilla Festival is over on the evening of March 8th, I will be pulling out my huge desk calendar and start planning again:) If you know of any great events within 100 miles of Tampa, please let me know!! I'll post the details of the festival as soon as I get more information!!!

About Dog Food Analysis - Why does this site exist?

Because commercial pet food is, historically and on average, so incredibly awful. Really, that is the reality of the commercial pet food industry. We are bombarded with advertising that conjures up images of plump juicy chickens and garden fresh vegetables, told that the various foods around are scientifically formulated to provide our pets with every nutritional advantage and meet every need. At the same time, many of us feel we need a science degree just to interpret the labels. But the reality is quite different. “Scientifically formulated” is a term with no meaning. Do you scientifically formulate your dinner? Do you think you need to? Sounds quite ridiculous, doesn’t it. No, you (hopefully) consume a range of fresh foods. That’s what your pets should be consuming too.

Sadly, that’s not what goes into most pet foods. Many pet foods are made up mostly of grain fragments (the left overs from the human food industry), with a small amount of meat thrown in and the whole thing coated with recycled used (and frequently carcinogenic) fats to make it palatable to our pets. In most cases, these are things we’d refuse to feed our pets if we saw them in their raw state. So why would we feed them when they are transformed into dry extruded pellets? Why are we feeding carnivores on grains anyway? We wouldn’t try to feed fish to a cow, so why try to feed grains to our carnivorous cats and dogs? The answer is simple – it is far cheaper than feeding meat, and in any case, we can’t make kibble without them (it won’t stick together). But it has nothing whatsoever to do with good or species-appropriate nutrition for our pets. Neither cats nor dogs have any evolved need of carbohydrates in their diet at all, and these are readily converted to fat.

It is not the point of this site to explain what is wrong with many commercial pet foods, or to expose the many scandals and unpleasant practices that have gone on in this industry. If you’re interested, it is easy to find that information for yourself. You’re on the internet now: just do a search for information on things like “4-D meats”, “phenobarbitol in pet food”, “foods pets die for” and “what’s really in pet food”. You will probably find the results an unpleasant surprise.

From the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Davis Islands:
Bring your best friend to the first Paws for the Cure, January 17 at Sea Plane Basin Park. The event gives the Davis Islands Community the opportunity to:
Help adorable and adoptable animals find new homes.
Raise money for The American Cancer Society.
And give your canine a chance to show their best stuff!

The day will include a dog show and most importantly, a Pet Cancer Survivor relay lap. You will also have the opportunity to meet with pet rescue groups and pet care professionals. Including local veterinarians, Wag Pet Boutique, Pet Photographers, Pet Artists, Trainers, dog walkers and more!

Face it… cancer affects everyone… including your pets. Many people have pets that have fought the battle against cancer and won. Sadly we’ve known others who have lost the fight. In honor of all of our pet angels, the American Cancer Society is hosting Paws for the Cure. This event will be a precursor to our annual Relay For Life of Davis Islands, which will honor and remember all of our two legged friends that have fought the battle.

It's the day after thanksgiving and I sitting here looking at 3 sleepy dogs, curled up on the floor. One is mine and the other two are her best friends which we are dogsitting. There are many things I'm thankful for this season... family, friends, the somewhat stable environment we live in during these crazy times, etc. etc. etc. I'm even thankful for the $5 fake christmas tree that's half assembled in my living room that looks completely horrible and resembles nothing close to a tree (even though the first chance I get I'm switching it out for a better fake tree).

And on the top of my list are the people who have supported me by purchasing a piece of dog art to have or to give to someone they love.... to you, I say thank you. Without you, I would not be where I am today.... so thank you!! Gracias! Merci! I wish you all a warm and happy holiday season!

This was such a neat event! I've never been in the presence of SO many pugs before in my life. Very surreal...and very fun, too! This was PROOF's (Pug Rescue of Florida) biggest fundraiser of the year and from my point-of-view, it was a success. Very large turn out! Yeah pugs!!

In the memory of Shannon Morton

Shannon was a volunteer and one of the youngest employees ever of the Humane Society. She passed away in November of 1996 and the tournament has been in her memory ever since. As an animal advocate, animals just gravitated to her. If you visit the Humane Society of Pinellas look for her memorial plaque in the front lobby of the Shelter. This is the largest fund-raising event the HSP has every year for the Shelter. So come on out and help the animals in need and hit a ball or two!
